Singing of a New American: Pauli Murray’s Legacy and Justice in the 21st Century (Howard Law School)

 

 

 

 

Anna Pauline (Pauli) Murray [HUSL 1944] was a writer, activist, lawyer, university professor, priest, and saint. Over the course of 75 years, Murray worked at the intersection of race, sex, and gender. Black women were the center of her worldview. For Murray, equality required whatever it took to make Black women equal. Neither sex nor race could be ignored in the struggles for racial equality and sexual equality, respectively. She theorized and worked with both movements. She insisted that she and black women be seen and heard.

On Friday September 15, 2017, the Howard University School of Law Constitutional Law Center will host “Singing of a New American”: Pauli Murray’s Legacy and Justice in the 21st Century. During this one-day event, speakers will answer the following question: “What does Pauli Murray teach us about justice and equality in the 21st century?” Speakers were chosen based on short proposals (no more than 500 words) that clearly outlined the answer to the question.

Alexis Pauline Gumbs and Julia Roxanne Wallace will perform as the closing ceremony of this historic event.
