Poetry Workshop at LaVenson Press Studios (Durham, NC)

Alexis will lead a poetry workshop called “Blue Airmail Letters:  The Impossible Poem Home” 9am-12pm on November 2nd, 2013 at LaVenson Press Studios located in Hillsborough, NC (near Durham, NC). Alexis says of the workshop:

SYLVIA WYNTER, a brilliant Jamaican thinker, defines the poetic as our human way of attempting to say what the circumstances of our life make it impossible to say and almost impossible to think.   We have to find a way to say it anyway.  Whether what you have to say is blocked by barriers of distance, disagreement, difference, diaspora, death, defiance, debt or dial tones, this workshop activates the practice of poetry as a ceremony to make visible and known invisible truths that seem impossible to say.   I am a poet because I had to find a way to communicate with my mother who I love and fear too much for words. I had to find a way to stay in communication with my grandmother after she died. I had to find a way to stay connected to the places in my heritage that are hundreds of miles away.   I am excited to bring my now decades-long practice of impossible poems home to LaVenson Press Studios so we can support each other in speaking our impossible, necessary truths.

Fee: $80 Includes Lunch & Light Snacks
